Top beach volleyball stars in Adeje showdown for Games

SPAIN'S beach volleyball stars, male and female, will be battling it out against various nations in Adeje for an elite place in next year's London Olympics.

The Continental Cup Canary Islands' tournament takes place from 30th Sept-2nd Oct at Playa Fanabe, featuring Europe's top teams who have spent three years qualifying for the event.

This prestigious showdown is a collaboration between the sport's International Federation, the European Confederation and the Royal Spanish Federation.

The winners of each category will compete in the Grand Final, which guarantees their entry to the Olympics.

As well as Spain, the field features national teams from Germany, Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, Austria, Serbia and Slovakia.

The Adeje tournament was launched officially last Friday at Adeje's Cultural Centre, when guest speakers among an array of dignitaries present included José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Mayor of Adeje, and María del Cristo Pérez, Tenerife Sports Minister.

Spain have two teams in both sections. Representing the men are Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira, who won the Tenerife Championship Cup last year and are ranked third in the world, plus Raúl Mesa and Inocencio Lario.

Herrera, 28, played for Spain in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won a silver medal at the Athens Games four years earlier.

Not surprisingly, he is considered to be the finest Spanish player in history, and is rated by some as the current best in the world.

Tenerife's Mesa, also 28, won the Open European Tour in Spain in 2008 and was also Absolute Champion of Europe. He actually won the world Under-21 title in 2002 alongside Herrera.

Mesa's 26-year-old team-mate, Lario, moved to the Island seven years ago, having also won the Under-21 world title with another partner in 2004.

The leading Spanish women's team are 23-year-olds Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Steiner, who both studied in Tenerife and also live here. They are considered to be Spain's greatest team ever.

Steiner studied tourism at the University of La Laguna, and Baquerizo also studied in Tenerife. They started the season in a lowly134th on world rankings but have since forced their way into the top 25. No other Spanish couple have ever achieved such a position.

Nadia Campisi and Cristina Hopf make up the other Spanish team, and all the girls will face strong opposition because Germany's Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig won last year's Tenerife Championship Cup. They also have several European Championships to their credit.

Beach volleyball, played by teams of two players on a sand court, has been an Olympic sport for several years. It began in southern California and Hawaii and is now popular the world over.

Even countries like Switzerland, which do not have traditional beaches, have been gripped by the sport. And the London Games has already had tons of sand transported into the capital for the event, which is taking place at Horse Guards Parade.

In fact, there is a women's international "test" event, featuring the American world champions, being staged there right now to ensure that conditions are perfect for The Games.

Flying Sponge Bob

Seemingly children's entertainment has now gone to a whole new level with the arrival of a performance in which Sponge Bob can fly

"The musical has been on tour around Spain and has proved a tremendous hit, just like it did in the UK."

I can't imagine what this would be like but I can imagine that it would be pretty silly

Meson el Monasterio, Los Realejos, Tenerife

This is a gem of a place to visit, so many choices of eating areas, the last time we went there were all types of birds walking around where we ate but not one bit of bother.
The homemade bread and lard (  not diet material ) was so nice we brought some home from  the little shop.
Look at thier website for more info.

Fans of James Blunt can expect to see a rather different side to him when he comes to Tenerife this summer.

He was, of course, catapulted to world-wide fame with Back to Bedlam and more specifically You're Beautiful.
But his third album, Some Kind of Trouble has been described as showing a more fun side to Blunt, with more spontaniety. "Exciting, energetic and funny" say the critics.
James Blunt now has fans throughout the world and Spain and Tenerife are no exceptions.
His first album All The Lost Souls was placed at number one in no less than ten countries.
Two world tours were to follow and 18 million album sales.
Not surprisingly, the hall at the Auditorium de Tenerife is expected to be full to the brim when Blunt takes to the stage at 9pm on July 28th. Ticket prices are 40 to 50 euros.
This concert is yet more evidence that Tenerife can pull in the top names, north or south of the island.

El Rincon, Callao Salvaje, Tenerife

On Saturday evening and fancying a bite to eat, popped into this restaurant located behind the Banco Santander.

To say we were pleasantly surprised would be a major understatement.
We noticed while ordering that the main meals were very reasonably priced ( many at only 5€). When the meals arrived they were good sized portions at prices I haven't seen for a good couple of years. I would highly recommend the spare ribs. Spare ribs and mussels seemed to be a favourite with many of the other diners many of whom were locals.

When the bill came we were shocked how little it came to, as the drinks and coffee prices were very reasonable too.

My only slight criticism was that the service was slightly slow as there was only one waitress on this busy evening.
We will certainly be returning soon.
